Josh Thomas is known for being the cute, skinny scraggly guy you would have laughed at in high school, feeling kind of sorry for whilst the guys picked on him for doing drama. Now he’s famous and that nerdy-cute thing has kind of turned into a you-can-make-me-laugh-so-hard-you’re-pretty-attractive kind of appeal. Almost. Sometimes, you just want to get up and give him a good feed. Or maybe that’s my European grandmother channelling me there… Nonetheless!Josh Thomas makes his dorky dweebiness his schtick throughout the show and elaborates constantly on the fact that sex, drugs rock’n’roll wasn’t exactly his teenager experience. It's sweet, cringeworthy and hilarious all at the same time; with the most memorable moments of the show revolving around his exploitation of how non-threatening he looks/seems to drop the biggest ‘POLITICALLY INCORRECT’ bombshells you’ve heard on stage. Marzipan, British backpacker intercourse, abortions, nothing is too far out for Josh Thomas to touch with his funny-making wand. And although that sounds totally dirty and a rip-off from his show, it isn’t!
Speaking of sex does take up a lot of the show, admittedly, and Josh seems to peak too early in this regard (lame pun completely intended). The best jokes are seen around two-thirds of the way through the show and we listen as the hilarity kind of dwindles towards the end. Josh does have fantastic timing, can work an audience like a pizza cook works dough, and has a special talent for blending charm with awkwardness. However, it’s kind of a one-trick pony at times, with a constant focus on how awkward/weird/not-quite-right his life is, leaving us not laughing with him, or even at him, for that matter, but simply wondering if his life is really that bad, how come he gets to tour around the country and be on TV and famous when we’re stuck down here in the audience?
That said, he’s a giggle-giver to gaggles of gals and guys, so don’t be shy from this young blonde man who insists we ALL know he was drama prefect at school – he is well worth a watch!
JT is definitely a 3.5/5 – he’s bringing awkward back, what?!
